Award winning radio production “VICTIMS ALL OF US a story of child prostitution:

In May of 2003 12 -15 children ages 9 – 17 years of age assaulted an older lady they perceived to be a prostitute within their community of Edmonton known as 118 Ave . The children approached and confronted this lady given her disheveled and confused manner she was exhibiting. The children swarmed, punched, kicked and even took turns “dancing on her face” while the victim lay on the ground. The victim after the beating stood up and collapsed onto the roadway. Her injuries included broken ribs, significant bruising and lacerations. The lady in fact was not prostitute but had just been sexually assaulted and was trying to make her way home. None of the children had ever been in conflict with the law before and 3 were charged with aggravated assault. This was classified as a hate crime as the only motivation for the attack was whom these children perceived this woman to be. This case was referred to YRAP and a conference was held in which the victim also attended. The sentence required numerous items including a psychological assessment and treatment. One aspect of the sentence was to also produce, edit and help in the production of this two part special radio show. This radio documentary highlights 7 child prostitutes, 5 child vigilantes, 1 child pimp and 1 child bystander….they are all female and all under the age of 18. Initially the girls are unfocused and do not understand the harm they have caused. They feel Prostitution is a result more of choice as opposed to circumstance. As these 3 girls interview and listen to children involved in prostitution they start seeing another world and the victimization prostitution. Underlying issues soon surface with the girls including prior involvement in prostitution. By the end of part 2 one thing is clear and is stated by one of the three girls, “Victims…all of us” . Thus the name of the show.

Aired in Australia, Netherlands, United States, England and on CJSR 88.5 FM, one of YRAP’s partners.
